The bioethanol and biogas manufacturer “Kurana” operating in the Pasvalys district will set up a factory where industrial waste unusable in the food or feed supply chain, such as starch suspension waste and food waste, will be produced for the second generation Bioethanol. The factory should start operating in mid-2025.
Investments in the second-generation renewable fuel plant will amount to 10.8 million. EUR, of which 3.5 million EUR to be received under the economic revitalization and resilience plan “New Generation Lithuania”. During the project, new equipment for the production of the second generation bioethanol will be purchased and installed.
After “Kurana” expanded its production capacity, the annual production volume of bioethanol will reach 4.99 kilotons of oil.
“The main goal of the project is to create liquid second-generation biofuel production capacity, which will allow the production of a clean and sustainable energy source, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to the solution of climate change problems. The second generation bioethanol emits up to 80 into the environment % less CO2 than fossil fuel and significantly contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases”, says Jurgis Polujanskas, CEO of Kurana.
The production of bioethanol in the new plant will reduce the dependence on oil and other fossil fuels, which cause significant damage to the environment and whose market price is unstable.
The project will allow efficient use of waste and residues that usually end up in landfills, so “Kurana” will help other companies to solve waste utilization problems, and will ensure the principles of the circular economy in their activities.
All production in “Kurana” is waste-free. The biogas released in the production process is used for the production of biomethane, and the biomass is mixed with gasoline in Lithuania, and in Lithuania, as in many other EU countries. By increasing the share of ethanol in gasoline, it is possible to significantly reduce greenhouse emissions and decarbonize the transport sector.
The National Energy Independence Strategy provides that by 2030, 15 percent the energy consumed by the transport sector must consist of energy from renewable energy sources.
